*It is quite possible that I’ve screwed up this source info. I did a bad job of labeling the zip files so that I would remember which source was which. However correct text files are included in the download.

The Owen Brothers Vault
Editing and mastering by The Wizard –
This is the older of two currently circulating soundboard sources for this show. The newer one is highly compressed and I think the older one has better dynamics. Both will be available from the OBV.

Most tunings were cut on this source. They were restored from a SBD>MR>C>C>CD source that I have had for some time.

Other patches were supplied by the AUD tape,
AUD: Sony ECM-280>Sony TC-153SD>MC>RR>DAT>CDR.

Here is a general summary.
The cut start of Estimated was restored from the Aud source.
The glich in Sugaree patched with the Aud source.
The glich in Sampson patched with the Aud source.
The glich in Music was was patched with the alt SBD source.
The glich in Franklin’s was patched with the alt SBD source.
The flip in Around patched with the Aud source.
Lots of misc. pops removed.
All patches were processed to match the source as best as possible.
All editing and mastering done with DCArt Millennium Software.

Note from seeder: This is simply the version of 3/18/77 that wasavailable at archive.org in the good old days (http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=254) with the exception being that d2t1 through d2t3 are the Scott Clugston patched versions as noted above. I had to renumber the disc two tracks from Samson
through Estimated because in shnid=254 the tuning (d2t1) was not there.
Thus I created a new MD5 file for d2. Enjoy!

Notes from Mat:

The Grateful Dead are very close to my favorite band and 1977 is likely my favorite year for them. This year does not have quite the fierceness of their late 60s stuff nor quite the improvisational swing they had in 1972 but they are still playing like warrior poets and it has the benefit of having more of my favorite songs. Thanks go out to Raoul for providing me with some of the gaps in my 1977 collection and for providing me with some additional source material.

Deadheads are notorious perfectionists and as such I’ll be presenting multiple sources on some of the shows throughout this year. I won’t be making comments on which versions are “best” so you’ll have to decide for yourself. I would say that if you are new to the dead you should probably go with soundboard sources and you might wait until I post the shows from May as they are all extraordinary.

Anyways, enjoy!

Review by Nathan Wirth:
I believe that tracks 9-14 are actually taken from the KKCY FM broadcast on
New Year’s Eve 1985.
Van provided these tracks for KKCY to broadcast as a New Year’s eve special.

The Orphanage material was actually broadcast on television (so videos of it do exist),
and I believe that Yellow Cat used it as its source.

The evening was hosted by Tom Donahue — a local Bay Area radio personality —
and there are several quick interviews with Van throughout the CD.

Musicians:
The backing band on the Orphanage tracks was Soundhole, a band from the San Francisco Bay area who backed Van up for two years in the early 1970s. More information on Soundhole can be found at:

Excellent soundboard recording featuring part of Van Morrison’s performance
at the Rhythm & Blues Festival, Peer, Belgium, July 18th, 2010
Brilliant Jazz Version of “Into The Mystic”
Introduced by Dutch radio presenter Hubert Van Hoof,
it runs for just over 50 minutes and features
“Into The Mystic”, “Fair Play”, “Tear Your Playhouse Down”,
“Moondance”, “Baby Please Don’t Go”, “The Healing Has Begun”,
“Help Me”, “In The Garden” & “Have I Told You Lately”.
The original version had some problems which resulted
in spaces between the tracks.
This is the “fixed” version which has removed the gaps
resulting in a seamless recording when burned to CD.
As the source is probably Internet Radio, the files are MPEG source and Flac
is used as refernce for formating the best archive.

Review: From Ivo @ vanmorrison news blogspot.com
“Several times, Van ordered David Hayes and Jay Berliner to switch from electric to acoustic
(or the other way around) mid-song, and kept on giving cues to Bobby Ruggiero,
the drumming apparently not being what he wanted either.
After and extremely lackluster Keep It Simple, I thought the gig would be over given
Van’s unhappiness during and after the song,
certainly when Fair Play was played at a much faster speed without the by now familiar extended coda thereafter
(but then again, all ballads were rushed yesterday, perhaps because of the noisy crowd, apart from Have I Told You Lately).
To my great surprise and happiness, nobody left the stage and things turned around completely thereafter,
when The Mystery was played with great gusto, and went down very well with the crowd.
From then onwards, the entire (and also Van’s) mood changed considerably and what I saw was a good gig
– not exceptional, but good, including one real gem: a long version of
Into The Mystic. Surprisingly, given the 75 minutes he had been allotted,
Van played (the usual) 90 minutes, ending with Gloria which had the crowd cheering along big time.
He was then escorted by two police cars off the premise and flew away in an already waiting helicopter
– destination unknown.
So, I left the festival with mixed feelings, thinking that the next time I’ll see this band,
I’ll choose an smaller indoor venue where Van is the only performing artist.

FreeMorrison Notes: This is a B to C Grade Audience Recording, that starts off a little muddy but gets better with each song. I will upload the SDB Version which is much better – but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, incomplete. This one is rather rare.

FreeMorrison Notes:
There was a supposed recorded interview with Bob by the BBC after the Wailers finished “Get Up Stand Up”  however it is still unknown if the interview also took place November 26, 1973.

Much Respect to my friend Bomba for sharing this rare gem with me,
please find the 2 Original enclosed text from Bomba in the folder.
Here’s some of the original notes and comments:

Notes:
“In praise and to the glory of the Rastafari, InI bring one love and Inity
to the massive with this gem from the original Wailers.
All of your favorite artists are together on three rare tracks from June of 1973.
In perfect harmony are Bob, Bunny, and Peter, backed by the solid rhythms of Carlton and Family Man.
Studio quality with a little hiss for historical accuracy, this is as special as
any material traded among his fans.
Then comes the second of the two sessions, this one from November 1973 without Bunny.
The Peter Tosh material, though, is still great.
With an open heart, you too can share some of this joy”. Bomba

Credits:
“This is the first in a line of DAT seeds, Jah willing, from a great friend
of music named Joey Newlander, aka cosmofone.
His collection is so blessed, as are we to share in his generosity.
To him, respect Itinually.
He converts DAT > CD, which come in the mail and are extracted on
a Plextor 712A, using EAC in High/Secure, Test and Copy mode,
with proper read offsets and the like.
All the details are in the logs.
Conversion, tracking, text & seed to EZT in Nov. 2004 by nibbles,
just a regular guy who wanted to share what makes him happy”. Bomba
